In the middle is a wall with a person looking out from behind it. Text above the image says "One more thing..." and below it says "Julia Walter".

Traces of Jewish Life in Karlsruhe

One more thing…

Translators are interesting people (can I say that myself?) and it’s always fascinating to hear about the other things they do.

Julia Walter, for example, gives guided tours on art history. When I met her in Stuttgart at the BDÜ BW’s 75th birthday party, she told me that she’s currently offering a tour called ‘Traces of Jewish Life in Karlsruhe’. It accompanies the special exhibition Profit and Injustice that’s on at Karlsruhe Palace until 28 September.

Sounds interesting, I thought… So I bought tickets and my daughter and I went down there last Sunday. My elder son is studying in Karlsruhe, and it was a good opportunity to visit him while learning more about the city.

And Julia did a great job. She didn’t simply reel off facts and figures, but shared her knowledge with warmth and enthusiasm. She made it come alive by showing photos of buildings the way they looked back then and engaging with questions from the group.

Of course we know more or less what happened before the Second World War… But you think about it differently when you hear stories of individual people and get to visit the places where they lived or worked. It stays with you at an emotional level.

Thanks again, Julia. I’m going to keep my eyes open for future tours.
